Positive About Being a Doctar:
A career as a doctor isn't always a walk in the park. The rising cost of
malpractice insurance; the stress of long hours and life-and-death situations;
the bureaucratic requirements of the job; and the significant time and money
consumed in preparation for a medical career can combine to make the prospect
of becoming a doctor quite daunting. Nonetheless, the many positive aspects of
being a doctor help explain why about 40,000 students enter medical school each
year in the United States -- and why approximately 691,000 physicians and
surgeons were employed in the country as of 2010.
Financial
Security
Medical school is expensive. According to a
July 2011 article in the New York Times, about 80 percent of medical students
graduate with debt, and the average amount of debt is about $158,000.
Nonetheless, a career as a doctor offers a level of financial security and a
higher standing of living that simply is not present in most other occupations.
According to a Medscape salary survey conducted in 2012, even the lowest-paid
group of doctors -- pediatricians -- averaged about $156,000 per year. Doctors
practicing several highly paid specialties -- such as radiology, orthopedics,
cardiology and anesthesiology -- reported average earnings of more than
$300,000 per year.
Prestige
and Achievement
While a career as a doctor typically requires
between 11 and 16 years of schooling, some of it quite grueling, many doctors
who have come out the other side of this experience list it as a positive.
According to a 2009 study published in the journal Education for Health, many
doctors surveyed cited a sense of achievement as a major reason that a career
as a physician is fulfilling. Doctors surveyed also felt that others respected
them because of their achievements and their profession, and that working as a
doctor was a prestigious distinction.
The Human Connection
In a July 2011 New
York Times article, primary care physician Danielle Ofri cites the gratitude of
patients she has helped as one of the primary benefits of her career. The 2009
survey published in Education for Health illustrates that many doctors share
her outlook; some cited the pride and sense of accomplishment that came from
helping others in need, while others described the sense of satisfaction and
excitement they derived simply from meeting and interacting with people on a
regular basis.
Continuous Learning
Another positive
aspect of being a doctor is that learning about the human body and the ways in
which it functions never really stops. For scientifically inclined lifelong
learners, this can be one of the most satisfying aspects of working as a
physician or surgeon. In a 2009 article in Education for Health, several
practicing physicians stated that medicine was an exciting and rewarding field
because the science is constantly changing. New discoveries in the field and
new patients experiencing unique situations make this a fascinating and complex
occupation.
